May camp

Finally got round to organising a camping trip this year. The plan was to go to the normal wood we user but to walk to it instead of driving like normal. This time would be the first time my Dad came out camping in the woods with us, he was bring a mate Mike along as well. It would also be the first time both of them had ever slept in a hammock.
After a quick final sort out of the kit we set off walking.

It's not to far to the woods but when your not used to carrying all your kit it can be a bit of a slog.

Finally made it to the woods and I helped my dad set up his new Hennessey Explorer and got the rest of the camp in order

We got the rest of the camp in order, whilst Mike got the fire going like a pro.

We had great evening and the hammock virgins really enjoyed sleeping hanging from the trees.

A new knife is being created.

Got a Dorest Wood-lore Clone from http://www.dorsetwoodlandblades.co.uk/ last year and I finally started to get round to making it in April.

I got some Tulip wood scales from Ebay.

I still need to round the handle out more, but figured I would use it for a bit first and tweak it slowly so I get a really nice fit in my hand.

So far I have learned a lot and I am looking forward to making my 2nd Knife at some point in the future.  Like I said its not finished yet.

Home brew

Just started my homebrew again. Haven't brewed since coming back from Australia in 2006 so it's been a while. Looking forward to the Coopers Pale Ale which will be ready in about 4 to 6 Weeks.

My Exotac nanoSTRIKER XL I won as a prize from the Wilderness 1-2-1 competition arrived in the post and I have to say I'm very impressed with it.

It arrived in a nice little box with no annoying plastic covers on like a lot of products do nowadays.

On opening the box I liked what I saw. Mmmm orange. It feels well made and very solid.

In the box is the striker, instructions, lanyard and a small big with 2 spare washers and the ring to attach the lanyard.

As with all strikers its about getting the angle right and after 2 attempts I was producing a good shower of sparks. I haven't had time yet to get outside and try to get anything lit with it yet. Think that's going to be next weekend so I can get some pictures or a video clip as its still to dark when I get home from work during the week.

I have had a play with the Exotac nanoSTRIKER and I think I prefer the XL. The actual striker is a bit bigger in the XL and I found it easier to hold and to use. Maybe I just have big hands and am clumsy :p

All in all a quality bit of kit so far.

Knife Strop Mk I

After getting a set of DMT diafolds and getting my knives sharp but not stropping then I thought I should have a go and make a strop. I had some leather offcuts and a piece of pine wood and as I was having a quite New Years Eve it seemed a perfect time to have a go.

The plan was to make a wooden handled strop so I could hold it in one hand and the knife in the other. It was also going to be practise of my whittling.

It was funny but as I progressed it seemed my Mora was getting sharper but I think it was my cutting technique was getting better and I was not having to force the knife.

It seems to work quite well and I'm impressed with myself.
